Lace up your running shoes and set your sights on participating in some challenging (and sometimes muddy) running events happening within a 60-mile radius of Houston. Yes, we’re talking about the more than 120+ area runs such as fun runs, Tough Mudder races, Spartan Runs along with the traditional distance favorites—5K, 10K, and marathons.

If you enjoy the thrill of running and have a fondness for obstacle courses or want the challenge of mud this region has many opportunities to indulge your passion. Monthly race info can be found here. Note: Some races may have last year’s dates until it’s closer to the event and the current year’s information is updated. Most races take place annually.

What are the differences between these types of races?

Distance racing is all about endurance to last the distance of the course. Courses may be 5 kilometers (equal to 3.1 miles), 10 kilometers (equal to 6.2 miles), a half marathon being 13.1 miles or a full marathon being 26.2 miles.

Obstacle course racing (OCR) is an excellent way to test your strength and endurance. Two examples of obstacle course racing are the Spartan Race and the Tough Mudder events. Both races have obstacles with heavy carry, get over the wall, upper body, grip, and water elements. In a Spartan Race you are competing against yourself or the runner beside you for the best time through the obstacles and covering the respective distance of the course. There’s a different community or team feel to participating in a Tough Mudder because here the challenge and goal is just to finish the course and runners encourage one another to complete the race.

Each race has varying amounts of obstacles you can expect at each distance. Spartan Race distances vary from 3-5 miles with 20 obstacles up to 26+ miles with 60+ obstacles. Tough Mudder distances vary from 1 mile with 14 obstacles (mix of OCR and Crossfit-style) up to 24 hours (no distance).
